After Christmas Sale Haul

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas full of happiness and cheer :-) I volunteered at my church feeding the homeless with some of my closest friends and spent time with family.....

This morning I woke up around 6 am and checked my IG updates and one of my friends had posted a picture of her in line at H&M for their scratch off sale, so OF COURSE I jumped up out the bed and headed to the mall. The H&M scratch off sale was where the first 100 people in line received a scratch off card valued at up to $300 off of a purchase (mines was $25 off $40 or more). I also went to Bakers Shoes where they were having a closing sale of 60-80% off the original price and then an additional 20% off and I also did some vintage shopping where you can always find a deal.

Check out my hot finds....

New Hair: Diva Diamond Curl

Hi All!!!

I have been neglecting you all and I'm sorry :-(    research papers, finals and graduate school selections have been kicking my butt!! But I'm finally FREE lol With that being said, I decided to change up my hair style a bit. I've never done curly hair, it's always been straight or wavy, so I decided to try something new for the new year.

Diva Premier Hair Company had a black Friday special (YES ladies, they did) and I definitely took advantage of it! I got 3 bundles of their "Diva's Diamond Curl (Deep Curly) Virgin Indian" for $224!!
The natural curly look was a bit awkward to me because I didn't feel that it looked right on me but after wearing it for a couple of days, I started to love it!

Make sure you check out their website because they are having a Christmas special!

Sunday Funday: Thrift Store Haul

Happy Monday loves!!!

Yesterday, I took my chica on her 1st thrift shopping experience :-) She's use to shopping at the malls and department stores and so I decided to show her how she could still look fabulous and spend next to nothing! I absolutely LOVE thrift & vintage shopping because it allows me to use my creative and artistic side to put together Haute outfits for just about any occasion. Plus, I hate shopping at the malls because it gets so cluttered, too expensive, I never find what I'm looking for and I don't like to look like everyone else lol.

Check out some of the fab items I scored....

Weatherize Your Body

The term "weatherizing" is something that most people think of when they are preparing their homes for the dreadful winter weather in order to stay warm and comfortable, but it is also something that should be done for your health as well. Cold weather means greater chances of getting sick, staying inside and fluctuations with mood (less sunlight = greater chance of Seasonal Affective Disorder..... My Clinical Psych side comes out from time to time lol).

Check out some of my tips for weatherizing your body and if done faithfully, can help you stay happy and healthy during the upcoming winter months!

Winter Hair Porn

I haven't done a hair post in awhile and figured I would update you all on my new look. I decided that I didn't want to bother with my hair.... AT ALL!! I've been so busy with school, modeling, dancing and in the process of moving and the last thing that I wanted to worry about was dealing with my natural hair (it literally takes about 3 1/2 hrs to wash, condition and style it...Ridiculousness!!)

Simone Tetteh is the Booking Associate at the magazine and although her job requires her to cast the hairstylists and make up artists for the photo shoots, doesn't mean she can't be fly while doing so.

Recap: St. Louis Fashion Week!

Happy Monday!

I had such a good time blogging for St. Louis Fashion Week! I got to meet lots of fab people, see the hottest trends for the Fall, party VIP style and get "behind the scenes" exclusives. The purpose of St. Louis Fashion Week was not only to show "what's in" for Fall, but to support 3 local charities... Haven House St. Louis, St. Louis Children's Hospital and SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center with 100% of the proceeds from each night of the runway shows held at Plaza Frontenac, St. Louis Galleria and Macy's at St. Louis Galleria. This year's sponsors included Brown Shoe Company, Effen Vodka, Bud Light Platinum, Monster Energy, Chevy, Macy's and more.

Take a look at what all went down from the shows I attended!!

Product Review: Alaffia Skin Care Line

I was honored to have the opportunity to review Alaffia's Rooibos & Shea Butter Skin Care line because of their wonderful community empowerment movement to give back. Alaffia is a company that promotes "fair trade Shea Butter" which means that they only "practice fair and ethical procedures to ensure that producers in poor countries receive a greater percentage of the price paid by consumers for their Shea Butter. They also strive to empower women in West Africa by looking at what the women have to offer (their unique skills, traditions and knowledge) and compensate them at fair value for these skills. As a result, they gain income and livelihoods to support their families, while maintaining traditions and managing a sustainable resource." (taken from

For the past 2 months, I have been using the line faithfully. At first, I was skeptical because when it comes to my skin, I don't like to mix and match products because of the harmful effects that it could have, but these products proved true to what they stand for....

Antioxidant Facial Cleanser: I was worried when I used the cleanser for the first time because it was so creamy and moisturizing and I didn't think that it would be deep cleaning enough to get all of the impurities from the day off. Of course I was wrong, it did remove all of the dirt and make up from the day and I verified this by using an astringent to see if there was any dirt left over...NOPE!! It also made my skin feel good and not dried out because of the African wild honey and aloe.

Antioxidant Facial Toner: The toner is in the form of a mist spray which was new for me because I'm used to using a toner with a cotton ball. It is very refreshing and I like to use it throughout the day as a pick me up when my skin is looking dry. Some of the ingredients are Rooibos tea, Shea leaf extracts for protection, astringent witch-hazel and African wild honey for moisture.

Antioxidant Facial Cream: I love this facial cream because it is not greasy and penetrates deep in the skin and doesn't sit on top so you can actually see the results of it working to improve elasticity. It contains Rooibos tea, African wild honey, and virgin coconut oil.

This is a product that I will continue using and I suggest you all give a try. If not their skin care line, their many other products from hair to body.

Visit for more info on their products and their community initiative.

Artist Spotlight: Jeannie Jones

A Diva, as Beyoncé Knowles so rightfully put it is "a female version of a hustler." She grinds hard for hers, is very persistent, doesn't take "NO" for an answer, throws herself in the ring with the big dogs and of course leaves the stragglers behind. But at the same time, she is very compassionate; helping those who want to help themselves and returning what was given to her. She is humble; not letting the success and fanfare get to her head and ALWAYS remembering where she came from. A role model; serving as a positive influence for the younger generation showing them that with hard work and perseverance, you can do ANYTHING!

Jeannie Jones aka "J.Kitty of the City" is a Radio/TV Personality, Actress and Media Executive from Washington, D.C., who began her career as a Journalism major at the University of Maryland. Her first major break happened in Norfolk, V.A at 103 Jamz radio and WAVY-TV 10 (NBC.) Jeannie then went on to create "Meow Media" which is responsible for producing her syndicated entertainment report "Jeannie's Juice," Kitty Lounge Radio and the PBS documentary "Our Children are in Pain." Meow Media in association with "Ready, Set, Impact" Global Multimedia Firm specializes in: Publicity, Radio/TV, Film and Music Production, Publishing (Meow Music Mix/ASCAP,) Casting and Management.

Jeannie's talents extend to voice-overs for the WNBA and spokesperson for several major corporations including IPod, Coca Cola, GMC, Anheuseur-Busch, MAC Cosmetics and L'Oreal Paris. She is also a featured music critic (WTTG-Fox 5 Morning News, BET, The Washington Post and XM satellite,) a motivational speaker and community activist through the "Jeannie Jones Position to Transition Series." She has also received numerous awards including the NAACP Leadership Award, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.,  American Heart Association, and Cecile House for Haiti to name a few.

The KaShonna Files chatted with Jeannie for an exclusive look into the journey and life of this amazing woman!

A Healthier You, makes a Happier You

Taken from

It is that time of year again! Hot apple cider, bonfires, tailgating, and my favorite reason of all: tight jeans with boots and a sweater. Fall is full of cute comfy clothes, crisp cool air, and so many tailgating parties that it is hard to stay motivated from all the work of summer. For many it also means the start of a new semester or the stressful time of year again when your boss is checking the timetables a little more closely.

Fab Find Friday: Atlanta- Alexis Suitcase Consignment Shop

Sidenote: I have to admit, I was skeptical about coming to Atlanta because of all the negative press I'd heard about everyone wanting to be in the "industry" BUT that quickly changed when I got here. People are so friendly and everyone has other goals and aspirations besides being in the "biz."

Anyone who knows me, knows that I LOVE vintage shopping! So while I was out one day exploring the ATL, I stumbled across this amazing boutique in Buckhead and I was like a kid in a candystore lol.  Alexis Suitcase is part consignment shop and part boutique that sells the latest styles in good condition. People can bring in their gently used items and sell them or customers can purchase high end items like Chloe, Coach, Tiffany & Co. and Louis Vuitton at a fraction of retail prices. I scored 5 pieces for about $18 :-)

Alexis Suitcase is also having their End of Summer "Grab Bag" event, make sure you check it out at one of their 3 locations!!

Weekend Recap: Girls Night Out & Faces and Fashionistas

Happy Monday :-)

This weekend was SUPER BUSY for me! I booked a modeling gig as an Ambassador for AT&T's "Back to School" program which I will be doing all month long and in addition, I had model calls and a host of events to attend. Two of the events that I covered were "Girls Night Out" and "Faces & Fashionistas" on Saturday.

"Girls Night Out" was held at Christopher Stevens Salon and I must say, it was nothing like I expected. The event was definitely the place to be and consisted of hair and product demonstrations using the "Design Essentials" product line and other sponsors included POP-u-LURE, Waffle-licious, Result2fitness, Coconut 1800 Tequila and Lance Omar Thurman photography.

The 2nd event I attended was "Faces & Fashionistas" held at Honey's Child Boutique. The event consisted of skin care tips, make up demos, before and after photos, a masseuse and jewelry, shoes and skin care vendors. This event more laid back than the first but was very informative and guests walked away with more knowledge on how to accentuate their beauty and gift bags.

Check out the pics below from both events...

Cutting Calories: 10 simple tricks to keep the lbs. off

Taken from

Summer maybe coming to an end, but that doesn't mean we should let go of all of the hard work that we put in over these past couple of months to look our best (you know... in that "little black dress.") The coming fall and winter months will be the TRUE test of will power and dedication to keep the pounds off especially with the holidays coming up. Don't fret, the simplest way to lose weight (and keep it off) is by cutting calories and you can drop a pound a week by cutting out 500 calories/day (based on a 150lbs woman- Yahoo Health)

Insight 2 Incite Magazine Spread!

Earlier this year, I booked a job for a fashion spread for "Insight2Incite" Magazine, which is an interactive lifestyle publication that promotes change through information, inspiration, and implementation. The shoot was to promote NV Showroom Boutique in downtown St. Louis (which had some AMAZING pieces.) It was TONS of fun and to top it all off, I got to work with 2 of my FAV hair and make up artists :-)

Check out some of the pics below.... and let me know what you think :-)

Product Review: Curls Cashmere Collection

Cashmere Curl Jelly & Leave in Conditioner

I have been trying out a couple of different products (not a product junkie tho :-) to find out what works best on my hair and I had the opportunity to review the Cashmere Collection by Curls hair company and I must say that I really do like their line of products and the fact that it smells like I walked into a bakery full of deserts is also a PLUS lol. The products that I reviewed are the curl jelly and the leave in conditioner.

Fashion Design 101: Head of the Class

It’s that time of year again kids where we limit our socials lives (no more sleeping in and doing whatever it is we want to under the sun) to a minimum and get serious and focused on the task at hand, SCHOOL. Back to exams, POP quizzes, papers, extracurricular activities and the many other things that we are doing to build our foundation’s future. Although it’s time to get back in “serious mode,” who says that you can’t have a little fun, especially with your wardrobe.

This “Back to School” season, we want to stand out in the crowd, mix comfort with style (especially if you’re doing lots of walking OR running to try to make it to class on time,) as well as scoring FAB finds on a student budget (think vintage and thrifty finds.)

Product Review: Sister's Keeper

About a month ago, I attended the "Own Your Natural" hair workshop and Kiki, the owner of Sister's Keeper gave me some products to review for my blog and today I'm going to review the "Hair & Body Souffle" since that is the one that I've used thus far (I will review the other later.)

OOTD: Island Inspired

This past weekend, I attended my best girlfriend's bridal shower. The theme and attire was "island inspired" so it definitely took some creative thinking to find something in my closet that would work. Needless to say the outfit turned out perfectly and everyone loved it!!

The Look

Top: Forever 21 (I cut it to be a midriff)
Skirt: Fabric that I used from a previous Caribbean inspired photo shoot. I  just wrapped it to my liking and secured it with safety pins
Belt: Thrifty find
Shoes: Aldo

Product Review: JessiCurl

The folks over at JessiCurl sent me their "Confidence Collection" set to review for my blog. This set is specifically designed for tighter curl patters (3c and up) and the products lived up to my expectations for moisture rentention, manageability and definition.

While the Hair Cleansing Cream did not lather in my hair, it did get my hair clean and left it soft and silky smooth to the touch which makes the finger-combing process while washing MUCH easier. It also helped when it came time to de-tangle and condition as well.

The Too Shea Extra Moisturizing Conditioner and Deep Conditioning Treatment is something that I liked (and will continue) to use together. Since my curl pattern is much tighter than others, I need that extra moisture to deep penetrate in my hair when I sit under the dryer. I like the fact that these two can double as a leave-in as well which definitely CUTS DOWN on my hair washing process and I can keep all the moisture in my hair (because I'm not washing it out) and I don't have to use a separate leave-in conditioner (saves me $$$ as well.)

The Confidence Coils Styling Solution I like because it's not heavy and does not make my hair greasy when I am styling and it is light with just enough hold to do it's job.

This is something that I will keep in my current hair regimen rotation :-)

Clip in extension tutorial

So I needed a change with my hair and I wanted to do something different and go long. Of course I've worn extensions in the past, but the hair I used was always straight or had a slight wave. Since I'm going natural, I decided to do clip in extensions with curly hair (to blend in with mine and keep the heat off my leave out.)

On Tour with CHI (Farouk Systems)

This summer has been crazy busy for me in regards to all of the modeling/dancing jobs that I have been booking! Not too long ago, I got booked to go on tour with CHI (the makers of your FAV flat iron) and it has been a dream to work with this amazing company and some of their talented stylists. So far I have done the St. Louis and Orlando hair shows and sure to do more when the tour picks back up in the fall!

On another note: If you don't know about CHI, Biosilk and Farouk, they have an excellent line of products that work to improve the quality/texture of your hair, protect, moisturize and nourish ALL hair types. Some of the *key* ingredients contain Vitamin B, Amino Acids, Silk Protein, Pearl and White Truffles...YUM!!

The products I love

CHI Iron Guard (flat iron protectant spray)
CHI Silk Infusion (heat protection from blow drying and flat ironing)
Biosilk Silk Therapy Serum (adds shine, replenishes, reconstructs, UV protectant)
Farouk Royal Treatment Pearl Complex (protects against breakage, reduces split ends, strengthens, nourishes. Good for hair AND skin!)

Check out more of the pics from the tour :-)

Recap: 2012 Natural Hair Revolution Hair Show

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to attend the 1st annual "Natural Hair Revolution" Hair Show at the Sheldon Concert Hall. I was booked as a model for "Design Essentials" hair company because they were sponsors of the show and demonstrating their new natural hair care line (which is AMAZING btw.)

The hair show was a competition where about 9 groups (from hair salons, barbershops and hair schools) showcased their best and most skilled work when it comes to styling natural hair. The competitors had to chose a particular theme (ranging from Old School to Fantasy) and their work had to compliment. The winner of the competition won a cash prize and a year's worth of bragging rights!

It was a wonderful event and an honor to be around so many amazingly talented people who embrace their natural style. The natural hair world is REALLY taking over and St. Louis definitely represented and did their thing!!

Check out some of the pics....

1st photoshoot w/ Natural Hair

Well... Not really, I did model an Afro wig for a shoot yrs ago (LOL) but this is my 1st time doing a shoot going natural, so I felt as though I should share it with you :-)

I was very nervous about how the pictures would turn out with this particular natural braided up do because I was so use to having my hair relaxed or weaved up (typical look in the modeling industry for models with textured hair.) But boy was I wrong!! The dress and makeup complimented the hair so well that it scored rave reviews at the RAW: Artist Showcase exhibit that the photographer wanted to shoot me for (I was honored to say the least.)

Check out the photos....

OOTD: Corporate Cutie

Gone are the days of penny loafers, over sized pants and solid neutral 80's/90's inspired skirt suits! In today's Corporate world, woman are taking more risks with fashion. Just like color can brighten up one's day, color is also the new "IT" factor and if done right, you can transform your boring work blacks, browns and creams into bold AND tasteful work attire.

I took a neutral tan/brownish pencil skirt (Macy's) and added pops of color with a royal blue vintage top (thrift store), pink belt (thrift store) a pink/gold necklace (Bakers) with nude pumps(ALDO) and got rave reviews from the co-workers and management (Tehehe :-)

Dressing too fashion forward was once frown upon because work was supposed to be a place of business, not a Fashion Show. But I believe you shouldn't have to be limited to the same color schemes and clothing options because you can make your outfits look good without drawing too much attention to yourself. It also depends on the type of company or business market your in....
If you work in Fashion, Marketing, Public Relations or any related field,  I say the Bold, the Better. If you are in a more traditional work environment, sticking with more darker colors (reds, blues, greens) or light pastel colors will be your best friend (and not make your boss mad.)

Check out some of my picks for the work week!

Artist Spotlight: Ceaira Jackson (Ex. Chef of SOHO)

Ceaira Jackson, Executive Chef

It's always so refreshing and inspiring when you can witness a friend's dreams turn into their reality! All of the hard work, preparation, restless nights and dedication taken to perfect a craft and finally seeing it pay off in such an immense way is something that should be truly honored....

Ceaira Jackson, a recent graduate of L'Ecole Culinaire, is the Executive Chef of SOHO Restaurant & Lounge in the heart of The Grove area in St. Louis. SOHO is one of the newest establishments in this area that has quickly created a massive buzz in the community. SOHO is very New York esque from it's lofty style building decor matched with neutral color schemes but plastered on the wall is everything that is "So St. Louis." SOHO is where the beautiful people are from their gorgeous staff (with exceptional customer service) to the crowd on Friday and Saturday nights. From their "finger licking" Southern inspired menu with a twist, exclusive private party rooms, rooftop patio and not to mention one of St. Louis' newest "IT" places to party, one can see why this is THEE place to be.

The KaShonna Files sat down with an exclusive interview with Ms. Jackson about her new position and let's not forget to mention.... to EAT!

Side puff w/ flat twist...

Today, I decided to do something different with my hair and try a side puff from the flat twist that I did the other night.

Product Review: Jane Carter Solution

Last week, Ms. Jane Carter of J.C.S sent me her "natural & curly hair care essential kit" to try out on my transitioning hair. First, let me start off by saying when I took my sew-in out in mid June, I thought that the 100% vegan moisturizing shampoo and conditioner that I had been using on my virgin Cambodian hair would suffice for my natural curly/coily hair. Big mistake! My hair was so dry, hard and brittle looking (not a good look at all.) So I was excited when Jane sent me these products because I've heard so many good things about them.

"Own Your Natural" hair workshop & GIVEAWAY!!

On Saturday, I attended the "Own Your Natural" hair workshop and beauty mart held at the Hilton hotel. The event featured some of the major key players in natural beauty and hair in Atlanta and St. Louis. The event workshop included guest speakers: Shalawn Willis (Lamik Beauty Consulant,) Kelli Bain (Owner and Formulation Chemist, Khemet Botanicals,) Tajuana Huges (Author/Celebrity Stylist,) Urbanbella and Design Essentials.

Pictures after the jump....

Now onto the Giveaway: I was given A LOT of swag bags (by the event coordinator) and I am giving away 3 to my lucky followers! The bag includes a 20% off coupon for JessiCurl, samples of Curls Milkshake, Lustrasilk curl pudding, Beautiful Textures Moisture whip curl cream and more!

Want healthy & shiny hair like this?

Then do this!

Crazy huh! Your probably thinking that beer couldn't possibly give you these amazing effects right? Well there are special components in beer that are better for your body than any soda (believe it or not.) When you rinse or spritz your hair with beer, its natural ingredients coat each strand lending hair nourishing benefits. In addition to B vitamins, the proteins found in malts are said to repair damaged hair and boost overall body. Meanwhile, the maltose and sucrose sugars in beer tighten the hair's cuticles for enhanced shine.

Healthy Habits 101: The Color Wheel

Over the past several years, healthy eating habits have seemed to turn into this intricate "follow the leader" type of trend. What was once as simple as just following the food chart has grown into a fad of keeping up with the latest celebrity diets, Ancient Chinese eating rituals and even the popular "lemon" diet. Healthy eating DOES NOT have to be difficult and you shouldn't have to stress yourself out with keeping up with the latest diets. Honestly, you don't even have to diet to maintain a healthy eating regimen!

Outfit of the day: !Color Block!

It’s summer, so I wanted to embrace the season by being bright and color blocking is a fun way to make a statement and stand out in the crowd!

To color block, you don’t have to necessarily buy new pieces that exhibit the trend. You can do like I did and color block with the pieces already existing in your wardrobe by combining them in a new way. In this case, the brighter the better. Be bold with combinations, trying new ones that you wouldn’t have done before :-)

Pompadour Braided Updo

So I knew the “Halo” braided hairstyle that I wore as a hair model for the RAW event wasn’t going to last long LOL. Since I’m going out with my girls tonight, I decided to undo the style and use the braided piece to add to my bun.

Fashion Nightcap: RAW: Artist Showcase!!

Yesterday I had the pleasure of being featured as a Fashion Model for the amazing featured photographer Cdaniel and a Natural Hair Model for amazing superstar featured stylist Faith O for the RAW: Natural Born Artist Showcase.

If you don’t know what RAW is, it is an amazing NATIONWIDE platform (currently operating in 54 major US cities) that provides independent artist within the first 10 years of their career with the tools, resources and exposure needed to inspire and cultivate creativity. The RAW Directors hand-pick and spotlight local artistic talent in the areas of film, fashion, music, visual art, hair & makeup artistry, and performance art.

RAW St. Louis was held at the Koken Art Factory and it was so inspiring to be apart of such a wonderful and talented group of individuals who like myself, are making moves with respect to their expertise. I’m excited that my dance company, Ashleyliane Dance Company will be the feature performing artists in August!! Be sure to find out when RAW is showing in your city!

Flat iron & Style: NO relaxer, just good products!!

DISCLAIMER: I am NOT a professional hairstylist!! I only know what works best for MY HAIR and I’m just sharing tips :-)

Yesterday, I got my ends trimmed and decided to wear my hair straight (the last time I wore it straight was in early June.) I didn’t trim my ends lol but I did flat iron and style my hair.

To achieve this look, I parted my hair on the side and sectioned my hair off and when I applied the flat iron, I used a fine tooth comb to guide the iron down my hair because since i’m natural, I wanted to make sure that I got it as straight as possible. As I was flat ironing, I made sure to bump my ends so that my hair was full of body and bounce and I feathered and added a flip to the right side.

At night I pin curl my hair and tie it with a silk scarf so that it lasts for at least a week.

So as I’ve stated before, I’m in the process of going natural. I’m currently in the “transition state” and trying to balance two different textures without resulting to the flat iron can be tough!!

So I opted to try my own twist on the Rapunzel braid (and it DEF looked great with my outfit last night btw :)

Outfit of the Day: Mocha Latte

Rarely do I get the chance to actually sit and watch a fashion show because I’m usually always in them, so today I was excited when I got invited to a Spring Trunk Show at Mark Anthony Boutique for a local fashion designer.

Outfit of the Day: Lanz Dress

I decided to wear one of my FAV dresses, a vintage ”Lanz” dress (as seen worn by Carrie in Sex and the City.) I first wore this design in a charity fashion show (pic below) and loved it so much that I searched everywhere for it until I saw it at a local vintage boutique. An original vintage Lanz dress (if you can find it) can cost you a pretty penny, but I scored this particular one for $25!!
